Split lock washers are small, helical‑shaped washers designed to help keep bolts, screws, and nuts from loosening under vibration, dynamic loads, or thermal movement by creating spring tension and increasing friction at the joint

A split lock washer (also called a spring lock washer) has a single cut and a slight twist, forming a helical shape. When a fastener is tightened, the washer compresses and stores energy, then exerts a spring‑like force that:

• Maintains tension in the joint
• Bites into the fastener and mating surface with its sharp edges, increasing friction
• Resists rotation that could cause the fastener to back off

This makes them useful in light‑ to moderate‑vibration environments and in non‑critical assemblies where preventing loosening is important but high‑precision locking is not required.
